If Your Dog Has Itchy Skin

If your dog has itchy skin it will scratch excessively which is not normal.

If you observe your dog scratching itself more than is normal, he or she may have an itchy rash which, besides being uncomfortable and painful to your dog, can result in hair loss from the constant scratching. There can be many causes for your dog’s incessant scratching, including parasites, allergens and skin infections.

Parasites cause a dog to have itchy skin by attaching themselves to your dog’s skin where they cause annoying itching and discomfort. Some of the most common parasites are fleas, ticks, lice, mange (scabies and mites), and ringworm. If your dog has fleas, you’ll notice persistent biting, nibbling or scratching at different areas of its skin. Lice are much less common than fleas, so you’ll need to check closely to determine which one your pet is suffering from. And dogs often don’t show outward signs of ticks so you’ll need to closely inspect his fur, especially if he has free run of your yard or if you’ve been out for a walk in the woods.

Allergies can also cause relentless itching, and the process of determining exactly what your dog is allergic to can be difficult. Fleas are the most common culprit. Most dogs with fleas will scratch to some extent, but a dog with a flea allergy will be miserable after only one flea bite. Other common allergies are caused by seasonal pollens, molds, and insects. Non-seasonal allergens such as house dust and house dust mites can also cause persistent itching and scratching.

Chemicals can also cause a dog to have itchy skin. Chemicals in cleaning products or other household items can be potentially dangerous or even deadly to your dog. Some common household products that can cause allergies are carpet cleaners and deodorizers, fertilizers, polishes and cleansers, dishwashing detergents, disinfectants, and soaps, shampoos or petroleum-based products. If you happen to have a particularly curious dog, keep most man-made products in a place where your dog can’t find them.

Skin Infections can also be the cause of excessive scratching. Your dog may have a reaction to a certain skin disease or may possibly be suffering from a combination of several different skin conditions. A major cause of skin disease is bacterial infection. When a dog’s immune system is lowered due to stress, illness or allergies, it can result in excessive scratching. Bacterial infections will resemble small round bumps on the skin.
